John Sinclair

From chart hits to crunching tackles, John Sinclair has spent decades living and breathing radio. His broadcasting adventure kicked off in the 1970s at Loughborough Hospital Radio, where he presented the chart show between 1975 and 1979 back when vinyl ruled and Top of the Pops was king.

While studying at Loughborough University, John kept the momentum going with a mix of music and sports shows on student radio. His big break came in 1979, when his electric commentary on a student American football game earned him a prestigious BBC Radio 1 award not bad for a uni gig!

That spark launched a long and varied career with the BBC, starting at Radio Nottingham, where John covered cricket at Trent Bridge and even reported from a one-day final at Edgbaston. At Radio Leeds, he added Huddersfield Townfootball to his patch, read live sports bulletins, and hosted in-studio coverage with all the action and insight fans could want.

Next stop: BBC Pebble Mill in Birmingham, where he delivered late-night sports news and featured in the 10:30pm regional bulletins across the Midlands. Then came BBC Radio Leicester and a chance to mix music back into the game. Alongside early-morning sports updates, John launched a Friday night indie-rock show, featuring live interviews with then-rising stars like Pulp, Bjork, and even a young Kurt Cobain.

By the 90s, John presented at Tigers games with commentator Bleddyn Jones and later Leicester City football, commentating through their unforgettable Premier League years under Martin O’Neill. His love of the game and skill behind the mic made him a trusted presence for fans across the Midlands.

After leaving the BBC in 2013, John joined Hermitage FM in Coalville, where he brought together his twin passions music and sport in one place, right up until the station's final broadcast.

Now at Coalville Public Radio, John continues doing what he does best: sharing brilliant music, celebrating sport, and connecting with listeners who love both just as much as he does.
